Tooth Extractions verses Root Canal in South Tampa
Don’t assume that tooth extraction is the most practical and affordable dental care option for dealing with a badly damaged tooth, you might miss a great opportunity to save your tooth while ending your pain. Root canal procedures in South Tampa are more affordable than you might think and are no more painful than getting a filling. Root canal therapy is simple and only involves a few steps.
What is a Root Canal?
At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.
Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics) involves the removal of all infection from the root canal. During the treatment the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses which may be present can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for filling. A temporary filling is inserted and the tooth is left to settle for 2 – 4 weeks before a permanent crown can be applied.
After the Root Canal
Although the temporary filling you will receive will last between 2 to 4 weeks, we do not advise you to wait longer than is necessary for your permanent crown. After 2 weeks, if your tooth feels fine, you will need to see your South Tampa dentist. He will provide you with several options concerning permanent crowns that are available.
